Last week, I was joining the CODE Jahrestagung 2019. On the first day, I was organizing the Workshop on Geoinformation Systems which we turned into a cross-disciplinary overview of the field. With topics as wide as GIS, trajectory analysis, information networks, change point detection in large (high-dimensional) spatio-temporal processes, remote sensing and deep learning, we showed the fact that working with geo data is a perfect instance of data science. There are challenges with respect to volume, variety, veracity, data is usually observed, incomplete and inaccurate, and the user interface is very limited compared to the richness of the data. In addition to the workshop, I provided the idea of GeoDialog to the innovation conference, which was selected for support by the committee. I am very happy to announce that 1,000 € are now available to support GeoDialog. A piece of money that we will be investing into a GPU-powered tablet as an additional type of user-interface for GeoDialog capable of lots of local computations in offline settings. GeoDialog is a simplifying approach in which complex information spaces such as spatial data can be explored with an intuitive audio-dialogue only. Though the concept sounds simple, the scientific challenges are still very large including:
- audio recognition,
- intention estimation from noisy text
- modeling and tracking context
- detecting context change points.
The ultimate vision, which might not yet be reachable even with research, would be to remove any visual interface and let people explore their surroundings with an audio-only interface, probably augmented by position and pose sensors (such as GPS and compass). This adds challenges of Scene description and Context description This would be a major break-through in all spatial problems in which display-size and display-time are limited including driving and most importantly indoor navigation and navigation in crowded environments where holding up a smartphone is perceived as an offensive breach of public privacy.
The conference was a great experience in that it interprets the main topic of Cyber security founded on excellent research. In addition to our workshop on Geoinformation Systems, the conference captured emerging and disrupting technologies including Threat Intelligence, Quantum Computing, AI for Cyber Security, Cyber Range Challenges, and Digital Sovereignty.
